The David Mark Berger Chapter of Cleveland Ohio recently held its 2011 MDA Humanitarian Award Gala. Honorees were chapter past president Sanford Shore, his wife Eppie and Dr. David Applebaum z'l. Dr. Applebaum, who was married to a native Clevelander, did his medical residency and practiced in Cleveland before and after he made aliyah to Israel. One of MDA's foremost leaders in new emergency response techniques, Dr. Applebaum and his daughter Nava lost their lives in a terrorist bombing at Cafe Hillel in Jerusalem in 2003, the night before Nava was to be married. His daughter Shira, now an MDA paramedic, continues the family legacy of helping MDA save lives in Israel. Shira wowed the audience with her story and accepted the award on behalf of her father and family. At the gala, the chapter announced that it had successfully raised $500,000 to sponsor the Blood Donor Room at the new William H. Bloomberg Jerusalem Medical Station.

Presenting the $500,000 check to Arnold Gerson CEO of AFMDA are chapter co-presidents Barry Feldman and Mark Sack and AFMDA Ohio/Kentucky/Western PA Director Cari Immerman.
