"Sometimes the moral and emotional support we give is no less important than saving lives"

25-01-12 , 00:57

(MDA Paramedic, Dror Eyni, who saved the life of Kay Wilson, severely injured in a terrorist attack in a forest near Jerusalem)

In December 2010, Kay Susan Wilson went for a walk in a forest near Jerusalem with her beloved dog, Pint, and her friend Christine.

Suddenly, all three were attacked by terrorists who stabbed them again and again.

Wilson, with stab wounds all over the upper part of her body, managed to reach the parking area where people saw her and called MDA.

A Mobile Intensive Care Unit arrived on the scene within minutes. Paramedic Dror Eyni rushed out to give treatment to the wounded woman.

While treating her wounds, Eyni heard Wilson repeatedly asking about her friend and dog. He realized there were other victims involved and promised her he would return to search for them immediately after rushing her to hospital.

"I felt her tremendous stress," said Eyni. "Sometimes, saving life is much more than just giving medical care and immediate aid. Emotional support, calming the person down and showing understanding are more important than anything else."

Meanwhile, the MDA team called for police back up which arrived quickly and began a search in the forest. Eyni finished treating the woman, took her to the hospital and returned to join the search.

He found the dog, who was also suffering from stab wounds.

Eyni gave Pint medical attention and took him to his own house where he looked after him until Kay's friends came to collect him a few days later.

Police found Christine's body a day after the attack.

Since the incident, Dror and Kay have stayed in contact.

"In our job, we have to be humane and caring. Sometimes the work is unusual and you have to work by emotion, which is what I did in this instance. I saw how worried she was about her dog and I knew we had to find him, so I went back to look for him.  The emotional perspective is no less important than the physical care," says Dror.

Kay also referred to this special friendship – "My experience has taught me that MDA not only saves lives but also provides friends for life!"

MDA Director-General, Eli Bin: "MDA teams are trained to give medical attention in the swiftest and most efficient manner. At the same time, they come face to face with humanity's most basic needs and serve the wounded at the most painful moments of their lives. Courageous friendships, lasting contacts and emotional bonds are formed daily, as in this case with Dror and Kay.

And MDA personnel will continue – as far as is humanly possible – to give the injured all the support they can in times of their greatest need."
